Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is on the western tip of the island, it tends to be rather windy and the temperature is generally lower than you will find in Funchal. It is possible to reach it by bus from Funchal, but this journey takes about four hours each way. You do of course get to see the countryside. This area is very popular with locals, particularly in the summer school holidays. There are interesting rock pools, that you can swim in and a conventional open-air swimming pool. There are plenty of shops and cafes and the number of establishments selling ice cream. A lot of tourists visit this area as part of an island tour, but the area is worth visiting in its own right.
